UW – A Mythical Beast

O this is the creature that has never been.
They never knew it, yet none the less
It's motion, its bearing and slender neck.
Crowned by the gleam of its still gaze - they loved it.

Indeed it never 'was'. Yet because they loved it
A pure creature was born. They always left room.
And in that space, clear and void.
It raised its head lightly and scarce needed being.

They fed it no grain, but only
The wish that it might be.
And this gave the creature such strength.

That there grew from its brow a horn. Einhorn.
In its whiteness it drew near a virgin girl -
And was in the mirror's silver - and in her.

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) The Unicorn
