The very popular gambling machine would not appear out of place in any casino today but ole’ one arm has a tumultuous past.
Charles August Fey is the name you can curse every time you lose, it was him who introduced the machine sometime around 1895. Initially garnering quick popularity the machine offered players a chance to hit a series of “lucky” combinations and pay out accordingly.
The fame would suffer and the machines would be relegated to backrooms for the 1920’s brought with its litany of prohibitions, a ban on gambling.
Given that it was still in its infancy this was not considered a rough blow and many were simply converted to candy machines.
The 60’s would see a revival of the machines with many being brought back, new and improved and containing many of the bells and whistles we know of today.
Interestingly, the one armed bandit is so called because it “relieves gamblers of their change”.
Necromancer owt.
