In what may be perhaps the funniest patent I have come across, a man named Benjamin Oppenheimer filed on the 26th Of March 1879 a device which if you happened to be in a burning building, would help you escape by, get this….
A person may safely jump out of the window of a burning building from any height and land without injury, and without the least damage, on the ground.
Benjamin Oppenheimer
The only issue is that the design he patented was based on a model of a parachute that was to be affixed to the neck and a pair of rubber shoes to cushion the landing.
As one person astutely observed – “attaching a parachute to ones neck via a chinstrap isn’t a particularly good idea unless you have a very strong neck”
I will attach a picture of the device as soon as I figure out why my media is having trouble uploading.
And what about you? how are you doing today?
Let me know in the comments.
